There is a rising prodigy in the heart of South Africa’s bustling cultural scene. Lakeisha “Keisha” Dick is a Cape Town youngster whose groundbreaking break-dance techniques and aggressive footwork are shaking things up on a global scale.
The Unexpected Lighthouse of Ocean View
Keisha, a resident of Ocean View, is already formidable. She didn’t let the fact that she grew up in a neighbourhood plagued by gang violence and drug abuse dictate the course of her life.
Dance, Keisha says of her upbringing in Ocean View, “can be an escape, a beacon of hope” because there are so few positive role models for children there. Keisha’s mother had been a dancer, and the success of dance-themed films like “Step Up” and “Honey” had her interested in the genre. From her humble beginnings as a model, she emerged fully immersed in the world of break-dancing at an American competition, her heart charmed by the form’s kinetic artistry. “Every flip, every spin, it made me feel alive,” she muses.
From Regional Success to Worldwide Hopes
Keisha is the youngest woman to win the South African ‘Red Bull BC One breaking competition, which she won thanks to her hard work and devotion. Her victory catapulted her into international prominence, and she will now compete in the world finals alongside B-boy Toufeeq Baatjie in Paris on October 21.
“I was overwhelmed when I won, I couldn’t believe it at first,” she says. “But once it sank in, I was filled with pride and anticipation for what’s to come.”
A Detour on the Way to Paris
Keisha, who is now competing on an international stage, is well aware of the fierce opposition she faces. She hasn’t let that dissuade her, though; she’s still keen to compete. I’m dying to go to Paris. She says, “I need to train even harder to win the competition.”
Keisha wants to do more than just win the competition. Her goal is to bring international attention to South African artists, showcasing the country’s cultural wealth and artistic diversity. I want everyone to know that South Africa is home to outstanding artists.
Bringing About World Peace Through Breakdancing
Her goals extend far beyond her happiness and prosperity. Keisha’s ultimate career goal is to perform professionally as a dancer and choreographer, sharing her love of dance with others of all ages. Keisha’s accomplishments are an inspiration to the people of Ocean View, showing that one’s aspirations are not doomed by adversity. Keisha hopes that her breakthrough in dancing would not only change her life but also motivate others to make positive changes in theirs.
In her own words, Keisha aspires to “change my world,” with the expectation that her actions will have a positive impact on those around her. And it looks like the wave she’s making with her strong moves is about to completely reshape South African break-dance.
