People are picking a side. When Heinz declares that ketchup must be refrigerated, a debate ensues.
Many people have strong opinions regarding the condiments they use. One of the most hotly contested topics about condiments is the best way to keep them fresh and avoid spoilage. That might sound weird at first since most people keep their open condiments in the pantry (unless it’s a spicy sauce, of course). Wait a minute, relax. I am joking, of course. Heinz sets the rules and not me.
Since they are the ones producing the condiments, it stands to reason that we would consult them for proper long-term storage. However, Twitter users are willing to debate the condiment company Heinz after it tweeted the contentious claim that ketchup should be stored in the refrigerator. This controversial tweet is causing friction on the web.
“Heinz doesn’t even know where their product should be stored,” said one angry customer. A counterargument was that “never, ever has it gone in my fridge, nor has anybody else’s.” The label on the container says what to do, but who’s going to tell these individuals that?
It wasn’t Heinz, but some hero showed up with proof—a snapshot of the back of a Heinz ketchup bottle with the warning “refrigerate after opening.” Even though this should settle the issue, many people are passionate about defending their preferred condiment storage method.
People complained that restaurants always seem to have ketchup on the table, even if it makes their food taste cold. Others countered that it’s better served chilled, but Heinz wasn’t finished provoking the web just yet. They replied to some criticism with snarky humour but maintained their position that the tomato-based sauce belonged in the fridge.
The question “So why is it on the shelves in supermarkets and shops then?” was posed by a man named Dave. “Where do you keep your soft drinks, Dave?” Heinz retorted.
Heinz does make an excellent argument, though. While you can find cans of Coke and other soft drinks on the grocery store shelf, you won’t see many people consuming them. Team Ketchup Belongs in Cabinets didn’t let that reasoning deter them, though. Mike chimed in with his thoughts on Heinz’s inclusion of soft drinks in the discussion.
I won’t waste my soft drinks by putting them in a microwave. Some of us prefer hot food, but that’s moot if we have to eat it with cold ketchup. Take out your book on food preservation and make sure everything will last in the pantry.
It’s unclear whether Heinz’s decision to conduct a poll on the proper place for ketchup was intended to further enrage the internet or to bring some sense of order to the mayhem. Although the Fridge has a sizable lead over the cupboard at the moment, the intensity of the argument so far suggests that the cupboard may yet catch up. However misguided they may be. As long as you don’t read the label, there’s no right or wrong way to store your ketchup.
Perhaps you’re the type to keep a bottle of something in your sock drawer for those times when hunger strikes in the middle of the night. Give us the lowdown on your ketchup storage situation.
